恐怖小説の祖ラヴクラフトの原作を映画化、日・米・仏3ヵ国の監督が演出したオムニバス・ホラー。第1話は60年前の惨劇を再体験する男の物語。第2話は不老不死を研究した博士と若い娘の愛の悲劇。第3話は魔物の巣に迷い込んだ男の悪夢。予算のせいか特殊メイクの完成度が今一つだが、ロマンと恐怖を描き出す語り口はどれも一級品。SFXをトム・サヴィーニ、スクリーミング・マッド・ジョージ、トッド・マスターズが担当している。

The Book of the Dead is used to present an anthology of H.P. Lovecraft stories. It's low budget, there's nothing particularly complex or profound about the stories and, if it weren't for the gore, it'd be easy to mistake this film as a made-for-TV movie. However, I thought it came off rather well. The overacting gave it a surreal quality (including overacting master, Jeffrey Combs), the gore was sufficiently squishy and the creatures were definitely Lovecraftian in nature ...especially Cthulhu.
